5 things you probably do that make you seem like a rude person

Do you do any of these?

  • Be nice. Everyone wants to live by this phrase, but it's easier said than done sometimes, especially when you think you're not doing anything wrong. Even if you think you're nice overall, there are certain things people do all the time that make them seem like a rude person.

  • These traits can be more subtle than you might think. They may not be intentional, but here are five things you're probably doing that make you seem rude:

  • 1. "Phubbing"

  • If you're not familiar with this term, you probably are familiar with phone snubbing. It's where you're looking at your phone when someone's trying to talk to you, when you're having dinner with someone or when you're supposed to be paying attention to something other than your phone.

  • It happens all the time. I find myself phubbing more often than I would like to admit, and it's important to know when it's happening so you know to fix it. To avoid this rude habit, put the phone down and pay attention to what's happening in real life, and save virtual time for later.

  • 2. Interrupting people

  • I absolutely hate being interrupted (as do most people) but I still find myself accidentally talking over someone when I have something exciting to say.

  • You can't have a productive conversation unless both parties are actively listening when it's not their turn to talk. It's hard not to interject your two cents whenever you want, but if you listen before you speak, you'll get more out of the conversation. Plus, the person you're talking to will appreciate your listening ear.

  • 3. Being rude to the waiter

  • My husband worked as a waiter for a while, and you wouldn't believe some of the things people said to him. Along with this aspect of restaurant etiquette, I'll quickly mention how important it is to have decent table manners. You don't have to know how to fold your napkin when you're done with a meal, but it's important to chew with your mouth closed, hold your fork correctly and know to not order the most expensive meal if someone else is paying.

  • Little things like this go a long way when it comes to being a nice person.

  • 4. Getting too personal

  • It's totally normal to be curious about other people's lives ( I know I spend way too much time wondering what the story was behind that salty Facebook comment someone I knew wrote). But, it's inappropriate to ask acquaintances questions about their personal lives.

  • Invading someone's privacy makes you appear rude and nosey, even if you're rather kind overall. A good rule to follow is if that person were to ask you that same question and you wouldn't be comfortable answering it, you probably shouldn't ask it.

  • 5. Not saying "thank you"

  • It's easy to forget to say thank you, but it's one of the most important things you can do. Skipping these two words makes those around you feel unappreciated and may resent helping you in the first place.

  • Being grateful will help lift those you are around and make you a happier and more appreciative person.

  • If you find yourself doing any of these things, make the simple changes necessary to be a nicer person. Everyone can benefit from a little more kindness in the world!
